My transition

A lot has happened over the last week.

a) finished block 6
b) Matched with the Kaiser Permanente Northwest Pharmacy Residency Program!
c) FINALLY got cleared for block 7 (and consequently, moved to Roseburg)

This is my third day in Roseburg. So far, I've managed to find the hospital, drive through the whole town, go to Fred Meyer 4 times, join the local YMCA, and find pretty much everything else in between. lol. I've always thought that Corvallis was the smallest town ever. Imagine my surprise when I find that Roseburg is less than half as populated as Corvallis!

More about my "host family." For those who don't know, my dad has friends (an older couple) who live in Roseburg. I'm staying at their house since they have an extra room to rent. They don't have kids, but do have another worker who lives with them (he's mysterious about how old he is, but I'm gonna guess 21 or so), so it's kind of like a nuclear family, the four of us, I guess. I'm invited to come eat dinner with them at their Chinese restaurant every night at 8. It's actually kind of nice. In fact, it's what keeps me excited every day. My parents never worked the restaurant industry, so unlike a lot of my friends, I never really knew what it's like to be in a "restaurant" family. I stroll by at 8 every night, and the auntie is so happy to see me! Uncle whips me up a bowl of soup and brings out food, and we eat, the four of us, in a booth, and despite the fact that I'm actually 180 miles away from home, feels just like home for just a brief moment. My host family works a lot. The restaurant is open 7 days a week and they all work 10-9. Except the other guy, Sam. He gets one day off. I don't really get to see any of them that much, and I guess that makes dinner extra special.

Today marks day 2 of my rotation at Mercy. So far, not much has happened, to my dismay. I have badge access to almost anywhere in the hospital, but where I want to go to the most (the computer), I'm still locked out on, waiting for IT to work things out. So....there's been A LOT of down time for me in the last 20 hours. We're talking about spending 1/2 hour at a time peeling an orange, cause there's no one left to babysit me =( My hopes are I'll be doing a lot more soon. I dunno, the work nazi in me is not used to doing nothing (even after the Target experience).

Tired today. More to come in the next few days re: residency and wedding.

  1. I'm very happy the host family is taking care of ya! Hopefully you can enjoy your time in Roseburg =). You can always "get away" by swimming or dancing away the time, it keeps you healthy and keeps your mind occupied with fun activities.

  2. Hey which restaurant is this? I've only been to Chi's Garden and China Palace down there.

Do you eat at the cafeteria at Mercy? Food is decent and you get employee discount. You can get a heaping thing of oatmeal with raisins and brown sugar in the morning for like 50cents!

  3. OOoh! I have not tried breakfast there. But yes, food is definitely affordable with the employee discount. The restaurant they own is Asia Garden. It's on Diamond Lake
